À propos de ce cours
Upper Sixth is the final year of secondary school in Cameroon's Anglophone subsystem, ending with the GCE Advanced Level exam and, immediately after, one of the biggest decisions a young person makes: what to study, where, and toward what career. This course gives Upper Sixth students structured guidance through that transition.
Guidance and school psychology support is meant to accompany learners throughout their schooling under Cameroon's 1998 Education Orientation Law, delivered through trained Guidance Counsellors under MINESEC's Directorate of Guidance Counselling, School Life and Educational Assistance (DOVAS). In practice, with a national counsellor-to-student ratio far short of target, many Upper Sixth students reach their final exam year without ever having a real conversation about what comes next. This course is built to help close that gap during the most consequential year of secondary school.
Students will work through managing pressure and study habits in the exam year itself; understanding what their A-Level subject combination realistically opens up at university, in professional schools (grandes écoles, concours), or in the job market; how university admissions and applications work in Cameroon, including public university options, private universities, and studying abroad; an honest look at technical and vocational alternatives to a straight university path; and how to handle results day itself — what to do whether the GCE results bring good news, a resit, or a change of plan. The course also covers personal and social topics relevant to this stage: decision-making under pressure, managing parental or peer expectations about "what you should become," and knowing where to find further support, including the Ministry's free guidance hotline.
Please note: Guidance and Counselling is not an examinable GCE subject and does not have a published MINESEC teaching syllabus like Geography, Economics, or English Language. This is a support course designed to complement a student's academic subjects and the guidance services available through their school.
